42. Mateusz Ponitka, SG, Tenerife

Potential is the name of the game for Ponitka, a Polish wing who takes over for Aaron Doornekamp on the defending Basketball Champions League winners. Ponitka has risen to the occasion every step of the way, from solid junior league forward to capable rotation player at 21-years-old to now legitimate offensive generator on one of the ACB’s most underrated teams. At just 23, Ponitka’s next step is to establish himself as the primary scorer he has the potential to be.

A skilled finisher and non-stop hustler, Ponitka has deceptive athleticism and is a great transition weapon that keeps the offense flowing. He’s an intelligent defensive player to boot and he seems to add something every season to his game. He was never really a legitimate NBA draft option, but if he can continue to take steps as a European player, he eventually could work his way into the league through the back door as a free agent. The goal for him this season is to continue on that upward trajectory, and he should be considered a major breakout candidate.
