Fantasy football: top 10 waiver wire Week 1 pickups
7. Charcandrick West
By this point, you can’t not know who Kareem Hunt is. The third round draft pick from Toledo might have been this offseason’s biggest fantasy football riser, as we had the unfortunate news that Spencer Ware was placed on injured reserve.
For the last few weeks, Hunt has been the talk of the town. “Andy Reid’s starting running backs always score highly” is the main argument among believers, but it’s important to remember a large chunk of Reid’s previous starter group is made up of Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles – all top five backs in their prime. It didn’t work for Spencer Ware last season.
While Hunt was officially named the starter and will no doubt receive the first few touches, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy threw a spanner into the works by suggesting all three backs (CJ Spiller being the third) “know they’re a big part of this gameplan” (for Thursday night).
West is the play here for those not completely sold on Hunt. Even if you do believe Hunt will see the majority of the work, West should have a role and will provide relief if the rookie struggles early. Handcuffs are bad, but committee backs can be nice plug-and-play fantasy options.
