Fantasy football: top 10 waiver wire Week 1 pickups
2. Ted Ginn
The top three targets in the New Orleans offense have each had over 800 yards in the last three seasons, and Drew Brees is more than capable of helping produce a ton of fantasy football assets. This year, with Willie Snead missing the first three games through suspension, and little-to-no other options outside of star sophomore Michael Thomas, speedster Ginn could be the beneficiary in a big way.
It has taken a some years for Ginn’s career to pan out they way we wanted (he never truly lived up to his top ten NFL draft selection in 2007), but for the last two years as a Carolina Panther, Ginn has had close to 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air. Although he’s never had over 100 targets in a season (he’s come close a few times), this could be the season he exceeds that total and he’ll do it in an offense designed to help their playmakers shine.
Ginn won’t step straight into “the Brandin Cooks role” (the now-New England Patriot had over 75 catches, 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns in each of the last two season), but will absolutely stretch the field and be heavily involved. In the preseason, New Orleans got him the ball on end-arounds, screen plays and on traditional routes, and I expect to see that continue all year.
