20 little-known facts about Canelo Alvarez

18. Judge C.J. Ross retired after scoring Floyd-Canelo a draw
A popular opinion regarding boxing – and all combat sports, for that matter – is that bad judging can ruin the sport. Pacquiao fans can certainly attest to that, which is why fighters are always told to never leave it to the hands of the judges.
While C.J. Ross’ scorecard didn’t change the outcome of Mayweather vs. Canelo, it did put a sour note on a great fight. Her fellow ringside judges scored the fight 116-112 and 117-111 in favor of Mayweather. The outcome should’ve been unanimous for Floyd, but Ross somehow viewed it as a draw.
Of course, that wasn’t the only fight Ross has scored. Prior to this, she judged the first Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley fight. With the other two judges scoring it 115-113 for each fighter, Ross swung the decision in Bradley’s favor giving him the controversial victory. It took two judges to give Bradley the win, and Duane Ford took a lot of the criticism as well, but as soon as Ross became a repeat offender, everyone remembered her name.
Amidst the intense scrutiny she came under, Ross hasn’t scored another fight. One has to think she received a lot of sexist comments in the wake of that fight which nobody deserves, no matter how much you may disagree with her.
Thankfully for Canelo, he hasn’t had a victory overturned by bad judging – yet. His fights don’t go to the scorecards that often, but when they do, the judges normally give him more rounds than he deserves. Canelo vs. Golovkin could prove to be his most entertaining fight yet, and the last thing it needs is to be decided by a controversial decision.
