Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

Whenever you see a team or individual player outright dominate their competition, it’s commonly referred to as “light work”. In that vein, Week 1 was the lightest of work for Oklahoma Sooners quarterback and 2016 Heisman Trophy finalist Baker Mayfield. The senior signal-caller was magnificent as he threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns. Oh yeah, he also did this while tossing just one incompletion on the day.

Even more impressive was that Mayfield did this in only one half of work. Granted, it was against a depleted UTEP team, but he dominated lesser competition like a player of his caliber should. In Week 2, though, the Sooner quarterback is going to be put to the test against the Ohio State Buckeyes. And what’s interesting is that he could really start to cement himself as a favorite for the Heisman if he plays at this level.

If you watched Ohio State against Indiana last week, they looked like a defense that lost the majority of their key secondary pieces. The Hoosiers threw the ball all over them early, but faded late. Mayfield and Oklahoma aren’t going to fade if they’re able to do the same. Subsequently, the second game of the campaign could be a big one for Mayfield and his Heisman candidacy.
