Milwaukee Brewers 72-68

Last week: 5-5
Last rank: 13

Heading into their Labor Day series against the Reds, the Brewers were riding high coming off a series win against the Washington Nationals. Now, swept out of Cincinnati, the Brewers playoff hopes are on life support as they have fallen behind the Cardinals in the wild-card hunt. They will do their best to regroup in Chicago against the Cubs for what could be a must-win series.

Ending the 2017 season without a playoff berth would not be the end of the world for the Brewers. Far from it, in fact. No analyst saw this coming at the start of the year. With another offseason of maturation and development, the Brewers may emerge as a legitimate World Series contender next season.

St. Louis Cardinals 72-68

Last week: 7-3
Last rank: 15

Just when you thought it was safe to write off the Cardinals for the 2017 season, they reel off seven wins in nine games to get back within two games of the National League’s final playoff spot. If the Colorado Rockies continue to slump, the Cardinals could be back in the playoffs after a one-year hiatus.

The Cardinals took care of business last week by winning six of seven games against the Giants and Padres. That’s what good teams are supposed to do when presented with a chance to beat up on the worst teams in the league for a week straight. It’s been the Luke Weaver show now for two weeks, as the Cardinals top prospect has run out to a 4-1 record with a 2.50 ERA.
