Big 12: Oklahoma now in prime position for a playoff run
Last season the Oklahoma Sooners, as champions of the Big 12, were left on the outside looking in at the College Football Playoff field. They were left out in the cold because, back in September of last season, they suffered a horrific, 21-point loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were allowed into the field with one loss on their resume.
Saturday evening Baker Mayfield and the Sooners had the chance to get the ultimate revenge as they traveled to Columbus to take on Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, and when all was said and done, they got what they’ve been waiting a year for. Behind an incredible second-half performance from Heisman contender Mayfield, Oklahoma came away with the definitive 31-16 win.
And make no mistake about it, Mayfield let it be known he and his team were itching to get this win, as he claimed the field at Ohio Stadium in the name of the Sooners immediately following the contest.
More importantly than exacting revenge on the Buckeyes, what that win on Saturday did do was place the Sooners in good position to get back to the College Football Playoff for the first time in two years. They’re now the No. 2 team in the country according to the newest AP Poll that was released on Sunday and they have a massive out-of-conference win on their resume against one of the top teams in the Big Ten Conference.
The Sooners still have a lot of work ahead of them within the conference, especially with trips to Kansas State, Oklahoma State and a conference title game, but for right now they’re sitting pretty as one of the favorites to be among the four best teams in the nation when the season closes.
But now, about those Buckeyes …
