Maribor face Spartak Moscow at Ljudski vrt on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

Spartak Moscow hope to prove themselves on club soccer’s biggest stage as group stage play begins on Wednesday. This is the Russian side’s first appearance in the final 32 of the Champions League in five years. They hope to improve upon their last performance, in which they finished fourth in their group.

Spartak Moscow have been struggling in European play for a long while. They haven’t won a European match since an October 2012 win over Benfica. Spartak Moscow come into this match having only won one of their last four fixtures. Overall, they are playing much worse than they did last season. They hope that this match against could lift their confidence. The performance of Quincy Promes will be very important for Spartak Moscow. He has scored half of the club’s goals this season. He has put the ball in the net seven times in 10 outings. If he’s at the top of his game, he will cause great trouble for Maribor.

Maribor are in the group stage for the third time in club history. Their last appearance came in 2014 where they played surprisingly well. They drew against both Sporting and Chelsea in home fixtures. Maribor had to come through a couple of difficult qualifying rounds to find themselves in the Champions League group stage. They are coming into this important match on top form. The Slovenian side have only lost two of their last 12 matches and have never lost at home in European play outside of the Champions League.

The team will need to improve offensively if they hope to defeat Spartak Moscow. They are on a slump of 255 minutes without a goal. Although, their defense is on a similar streak having not given up a goal in their last two matches. If they play their best, Maribor could prove difficult for the Russian side, but at the moment they are surely the underdogs.
