Mike McGlinchey

OT, Notre Dame

McGlinchey led a solid team effort up front in the narrow loss to Georgia, but a pair of crucial mistakes will stand out more on his game tape from Saturday.

The redshirt senior helped Notre Dame somewhat hold off a relentless Bulldogs front seven by allowing three sacks, although the Fighting Irish could get nothing going on the ground. While McGlinchey only made two mistakes in pass protection during the slugfest, one resulted in a forced fumble by linebacker Davin Bellamy end any hope of a Notre Dame comeback, and the captain took responsibility for the loss after the game.

That type of mistake has been uncharacteristic for McGlinchey during his brilliant career, as the left tackle earned second-team All-American honors in 2016. McGlinchey has started 27 straight games either at left or right tackle for the Fighting Irish and was a major factor in Notre Dame’s terrific offensive output in 2015.

At 6-8 and 315 pounds, McGlinchey is a physically imposing tackle who can push defenders back instantly at the line of scrimmage in pass protection. McGlinchey isn’t the most athletic tackle in the nation, but is developed technically and has played consistently well over the past two plus years.

McGlinchey will have a great shot to be the first offensive lineman off the board in April if he can avoid similar game-changing mistakes next week against Harold Landry and the Boston College defense.
