22. Benfica
Liverpool just can’t get this defending thing right. A team breached three times by Watford and five by City in the Premier League started their European campaign by blowing a 2-1 lead against Sevilla.
Familiar failings at the back were obvious from the start at Anfield. In fact, Sevilla needed only five minutes to take the lead courtesy of Wissam Ben Yedder, after poor marking and a missed clearance in the box doomed the hosts.
Yet Liverpool soon clicked into gear in attack. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both found the net, but the former’s missed penalty would prove crucial.
Sevilla got their equaliser 18 minutes from time via Joaquin Correa. It was yet another reminder of the defensive frailties set to ultimately doom a brilliantly free-flowing Liverpool side, both domestically and in Europe.
