If a woman were to direct a Bond film…

…who might that be?

First off, let’s pull back a little on the hysteria about Bond 25 being directed by a woman. There is no evidence (yet) that a female director is on the short list, nor are there reports that any women have been approached by EON Productions. But this doesn’t mean that we should be dismissive, either.

  • Barbara Broccoli’s recent admission, in terms of a woman directing a Bond film, has led us to this point:

"“It’s incredibly important to support a change in front of and behind the camera. I love working with women. It’s a different vibe. We have to promote women within the industry.”"

Broccoli’s statement doesn’t confirm anything. But this has not kept tabloids and other entertainment sites from speculating. Kathryn Bigelow (Detroit, Zero Dark Thirty) and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) have been mentioned as good candidates for the job.

But there are others who could capably helm a Bond film.  Among them:

    Susanne Bier

Credits: In a Better World (Academy Award winner, best Foreign Language Film); The Night Manager (TV mini-series, starring Tom Hiddleston)

Bier’s The Night Manager was most definitely Bondian, in its approach, based on a John LeCarre novel.

    Sam Taylor-Johnson

Credits: Gypsy (TV series), Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy

Taylor-Johnson directed Daniel Craig in the PSA, “Equals,” for International Women’s Day. While Fifty Shades of Grey was rather lightweight, compared to Bond, she managed to make Jaime Dornan rather Bond-like in the role of Christian Grey.

    Niki Caro

Credits: The Zookeeper’s Wife, McFarland USA

Caro, from New Zealand, has seen her stock steadily rising since her breakthrough film, Whale Rider, in 2002.

    Catherine Hardwicke

    Credits: Twilight, Thirteen

Hardwicke would be an interesting (and an almost natural choice) if Robert Pattinson were to be cast as Bond — his name has fallen off the list over the past several years.
