2. USC at Washington State – Friday, 10:30 p.m. EST – ESPN

It’s a shame this game is on Friday night and not Saturday where College GameDay would have been able to set up shop. USC remains undefeated after needing a big fourth quarter to get past previously undefeated Cal last week. Sam Darnold had to do a lot of the heavy lifting without leading rusher Ronald Jones II and No. 2 receiver Steven Mitchell out with injury. The Trojans can’t afford any more injuries at the risk of making Darnold play like he’s Superman, and while he’s capable of that in spurts, that’s not an ideal way to enter a road game against a ranked and undefeated team like Washington State.

This is show-me game for Washington State against the No. 5 Trojans. We’ve seen Washington State and others load up on a soft early-season slate of games and get out a nice 4-0 record only to be exposed in their first test of the year. I’m not sure if this is a game we’ll see Washington State look vulnerable or if this will be a national coming out party for Luke Falk. The Cougars quarterback has put up monstrous stats in his time in Mike Leach’s offense, but that comes with an unofficial asterisk in that pass-happy style. But Falk is an NFL talent capable of beating the USC defense that hasn’t looked like world-beaters this year.

The late Friday start will result in you needing to cancel any plans you have for the beginning of the weekend, but this is a special exemption, and I’m sure if you just tell your friends or significant other that you can’t go out with them tonight because you have to see the Pac-12 showdown, they’ll understand completely. Okay, maybe you can just make it up to them on Sunday?
