4. The President of the United States and a War of Words

The President of the United States began a war of words last week when he called out both NBA star Steph Curry and any NFL player who chooses to kneel for the national anthem.

The President first targeted Steph Curry and the Warriors for not visiting the White House before revoking the invitation completely. Curry and the Warriors, however, were unflustered by the President’s actions.

Next, the President called all protesting NFL players “sons of b******s” who need to be removed from their jobs.

However, the President’s words galvanized NFL players as more than 500 players protested in some form on Sunday. For the first time, NFL owners participated in the protests with their players as a showing of solidarity. The NFL weekend culminated with an entire team kneel by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Arizona. All of this helped to call attention to the issue of police brutality — which was the reason why Colin Kaepernick chose to kneel for the national anthem for the first time last season.
