Things took a bad turn at the end, with a 4-16 record over his final 20 games, but DeRuyter had a 26-14 record over his first three seasons as Fresno State head coach with a Mountain West title in each of his first two seasons (20-6 record over that span).

DeRuyter is now in his first year a defensive coordinator at Cal, and he has led some relative improvement for an abysmal defensive unit early this season. The Golden Bears are currently 89th in the country in scoring defense, 103rd in total defense, 109th in pass defense and 84th in rush defense. Last year, they finished 127th, 125th, 84th and 127th in those categories respectively.

Oregon State should seek coaching candidates of all acumens and experience levels to replace Andersen. DeRuyter will have to rebuild his stock as a head coaching candidate, which may take longer than one season back serving as an assistant.

Oregon State can get a closer look at DeRuyter’s defensive scheme later this season if they want to, as the Beavers take on the Golden Bears in Berkeley on Nov. 4. That may serve as a scouting mission for the athletic department if DeRuyter is viewed as a serious candidate to become a head coach.
