2. Scott Satterfield

Satterfield is in his fifth season as head coach at Appalachian State, with a 35-20 record. The Mountaineers are 3-2 so far this season, with losses to Georgia and Wake Forest, but they had double-digit wins in both 2015 (11-2) and 2016 (10-3), with a bowl win to end each campaign.

Appalachian State had the 10th-best rush offense in the country last year (250.9 yards per game). While they haven’t been quite as prolific on the ground so far this season, they’re still 38th in the country (199.6 yards per game) right now.

In a likely effort to keep Power 5 schools away, Appalachian State signed Satterfield to a contract extension through the 2021 season back in May. That won’t really keep the wolves from howling at Satterfield’s door though since a buyout would probably resemble pocket change to a bigger football program.

That said, Satterfield is “App State guy” if there ever was one. He played quarterback at the school from 1991-1995, and his coaching career beyond stops at Toledo (2009) and Florida International(2010-2011) has been spent at his alma mater. Those deep ties to the school could carry intangible value for Satterfield, and keep him from leaving for anything less than the absolute perfect fit elsewhere.

Oregon State will probably have to uncover a great coach and bring him up a level since most anyone with a track record of success at a Power 5 school will have little interest in going to Corvallis. Satterfield fits that mold.
