3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

When you look at Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State in Week 6 and what quarterback Baker Mayfield did in that game, it might be difficult to decipher how it happened. After all, he avoided turnovers again, threw for over 300 yards and completed over 72 percent of his passes. However, what that doesn’t show is that he aided the demise of the defense by not being able to get the offense in rhythm in the second half.

In the Red River Showdown against Texas this past week, you could argue that the same happened for Mayfield and the Sooners. The Oklahoma offense was undoubtedly less productive in the final two quarters than they were to start the game. With that said, the narrative was completely different, and not just because a Mayfield touchdown pass ultimately secured the win.

Not only did the quarterback throw for over 300 yards once again, but he truly had a Heisman Moment that so many people like to talk about. After taking a massive hit midway through the game, it looked as if he might have to come out of the game. Instead, he powered through his physical woes and continued to lead his team. And as stated, his leadership led them to a huge win in a rivalry game. In doing so, Mayfield put himself more firmly back in the Heisman conversation.
