Newcastle come into the match against Crystal Palace in a decent run of form, taking eight points from their last five matches. They beat Swansea and Stoke and tied both Liverpool and Southampton. Rafa Benitez has made an immensely positive impact since taking over the club late into their relegation season even without the blessing of big money signings. At home against Crystal Palace, he will be expected to come out with another win. While Newcastle have not been scoring much, it has been their defensive efforts that have led to their early top half of the table position.
Palace picked up their first goals and points of the season last week against Chelsea, which was the shock result of the weekend. Their first goal on the year came from a fortunate bounce off of Cesar Azpilicueta’s leg, but that gave them enough confidence and guile to score again and take the three points off the Champions. Wilfried Zaha scored the game winner and Andros Townsend partnered him at striker. The unlikely paring breathed new life into the side, and it will be interesting to see whether or not Roy Hodgson continues with that formation.
