2. Leadership Rep

“It may not be a physical rep, but it can be a mental rep and a leadership rep, and as we all know, you need every kind of rep to be able to perform at a high level.” – Jones on the different kind of reps a player can get during practice before losing to South Carolina at home in Week 7.

This zinger is just zany. If and when Jones coaches his last game for the Volunteers, this is the redundant and head-scratching cliché that sealed his fate. Leadership reps are now apparently a thing and no, they don’t result in scoring touchdowns at home against the SEC East rival South Carolina Gamecocks in a must-win game.

What Jones was trying to say is that his backup receivers can get more than just mental reps on the sidelines during practice. Can they or even did they? The passing game was atrocious against albeit a good South Carolina defense last Saturday. All the leadership reps combined for nine points in a home loss.

The media had to be baffled by this one coming out of Jones’ mouth. Just when SEC fans thought the HTB Team 121 trash can could not be topped during this lost season of Rocky Top football, we get this all-timer cliché coming out of Jones’ mouth. Like did he come up with this one on the spot all willy-nilly?

What can you extract from a leadership rep anyway? The only logical thing must be the second and third-stringer receivers are doing a really, really good job of being very, very attentive in practice when they are not getting physical reps on the gridiron. Good teams don’t need leadership reps, as they are accountable and paying attention in practice before must-win games at home versus division rivals.
