The Vanderbilt Commodores have had quite the run of head coaches going through Nashville, TN, of late. The most notable of them all being current Penn State head coach James Franklin. Yet, Derek Mason is having a good run with Vandy right now as well. He might not get to the point that Franklin did, but he’s building just as strong of a culture.

Vandy made a statement at the beginning of the season with a home win over the Kansas State Wildcats, a consistent competitor in the Big 12. Bigger things were expected from the Commodores than what was displayed on the field in the weeks following the win over Kansas State.

Coaching in the SEC is not an easy thing to do. Not only is there a lot of big personalities, but you constantly have to worry about competing at the highest level each week. That is something that the Commodores have been struggling with for most of the season. Fans can tell that there is a reflection of Mason’s personality with this squad. They were even chanting “we want Bama” after defeating Kansas State.

Even though the Alabama Crimson Tide rolled over Vandy this season by a 59-point margin, Mason should get credit for the fight he has instilled with this team.
