NFL trade deadline: One move every team should make

4. Los Angeles Rams: Trade for Vernon Davis
Sean McVay has this Los Angeles team rolling through the first half of the season. They’re 5-2 and front-runners in the NFC South. With the talent on both sides of the football, they’ve come along faster than most expected. If they are shopping around before the trade deadline, it wouldn’t hurt to add some depth at tight end, specifically a veteran. I look at Vernon Davis as a potential trade option before the October deadline.
I know Davis just signed a three-year extension with the Redskins earlier this year, but we know anyone can be moved at any time in the NFL. And with Jordan Reed slowly getting back to his comfort zone, Davis’ targets are going to decrease. He won’t have as much of a role in the Redskins offense and would be a perfect fit for Jared Goff and company out in Los Angeles.
The Rams have second-year tight end Tyler Higbee, but he hasn’t been overly impressive in his first season and a half. He’s coming along, but if the Rams are set to compete for a playoff spot this year, they’re going to need more weapons.
Davis is a veteran who spent the majority of his career with the 49ers and is more than familiar with the division. In times when Goff needs a crucial third-down conversion, Davis is one of those players who can play the first down sticks and has reliable hands. He’s not going to be a 1,000-yard receiver at this point in his career, but he can get you 500-700 yards at tight end and that’s pretty good within itself.
