NFL trade deadline: One move every team should make
By Joe Schiller
1. Washington Redskins: Trade for Joe Staley
I bring up this trade possibility with caution because it’s based on extenuating circumstances. All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is facing potential season-ending knee surgery but is playing through the pain. If it becomes too much to handle, the Redskins could be without their best player at the most important position on the field. I’m not saying it’ll happen, but the Redskins should consider a potential move for veteran left tackle Joe Staley.
Staley is the lone remainder of the 49ers’ 2012 NFC Championship team. And aside from Joe Thomas, he’s been one of the most consistent players at his position. He’s reliable on the outside and can matchup with the best defensive ends and pass rushers in the NFL. I don’t think the Redskins can trust any backups to take over for Williams. Ty Nsekhe is a swing tackle which doesn’t bring a ton of confidence. Kirk Cousins has to stay upright and without that, this team doesn’t have a flying chance come the end of the season.
There are definitely more pressing needs for the Redskins right now but this is a situation that could turn bad quickly if Williams decides he’s not healthy enough to play. Staley could be a rent for a year or two and the Redskins could suffice with cap room.

The Redskins have been back and forth this season but they’re still very much in the playoff race in the NFC and anything can happen. This trade probably won’t happen but it’s nice to dream right?
