Loser: Huddersfield

In what has become a theme of sorts for the Premier League season, it has been an up-and-down season for the smaller sides. One week will be full of celebration after taking down a giant, and the next will be full of dismay. Huddersfield have been no exception.

David Wagner’s side were last week’s big winner after taking down Manchester United in stunning fashion. This week, they’re on the loser’s side. That’s just life as a newly-promoted side in the Premier League.

Much has been made about the relationship between Wagner and Jurgen Klopp. Klopp is a long-time friend, teammate and mentor of Wagner, and the similarities between the two are uncanny. They even look alike. Their tactics are nearly identical, and that showed on Saturday during the thorough 3-0 defeat. Liverpool simply have the better players in every position, and when two like-minded tacticians compete in a game like that, it’s almost always the talent that wins.

The match stats painted the same picture. Huddersfield only managed one shot the entire game, and had a paltry 27 percent possession. Liverpool ended with 16 shots, eight of which were on target.

Huddersfield should be alright in the end. They’ve already showed that they can compete with anyone in the league, and can take down a top six side on their day. There will be more up and downs in the long season, and it will be up to the manger to ensure one bad loss does not compound into more.
