Who is Deshaun Watson’s backup on the Houston Texans?
By Jack Crosby
Deshaun Watson suffered a horrific knee injury in practice on Thursday, so now it’s time for the backup to step in. But, just who is that?
Injuries in football are just plain terrible, and on Thursday, the injury bug struck the Houston Texans. Unfortunately, it struck maybe the most important piece of their puzzle as they chase a championship in the AFC South. Reports on Thursday state that rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has played magnificently in his first year, will be lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL in practice.
Whenever an injury like this takes place to a prominent player on a roster, there are many questions that are asked. One of those questions is: Who is the backup?
Well, in case some may have forgotten, the backup quarterback to Watson is a pretty familiar name. With this knee injury to Watson, Tom Savage will now presumably step back into the starting role. Much to the confusion of everyone, Savage actually started the season under center for the Texans after Houston drafted the national champion back in the spring. And, much like everyone assumed would happen, Savage was not the answer for the team, and it was not long before Watson finally got his chance and he has done nothing but impress ever since.
With Savage not seeming to be the right answer, there will, of course, be whispers as to whether or not the team should go outside the franchise to sign someone, seeing as they’re right in the thick of the playoff race. Whether or not that’s the case, though, remains to be seen in the coming days since this injury occurred.
But, for now, Tom Savage is the direction the team needs to go in for the time being, which is not exactly the ideal situation.
