No. 20: Memphis

Memphis remains a quiet 8-1, having won in Week 10. Since this school isn’t part of a Power Five conference, don’t expect a dramatic advancement in the rankings. The Gophers entered Week 10 at No. 23, and could potentially advance by two or three spots.

No. 19: Washington State

Washington State earned a big win over a ranked team, Stanford. It came after an embarrassing loss to Arizona, which somehow didn’t kick the Cougars out of the College Football Playoff Rankings. Games against Utah and Washington remain, so look for Mike Leach’s team to float around the top 25 bubble.

No. 18: Ohio State

After sitting at No. 6, one week out from defeating No. 2 Penn State, Ohio State took a tumble against Iowa. It lost 55-24 in one of the most surprising results of the season. The defeat likely ended any hope of the Buckeyes making the College Football Playoff, barring a miracle. A New Year’s Six game might be in reach, but nothing better than that.

No. 17: Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech falls after losing to Miami, 28-10. The Hokies turned the ball over four times, resulting in Turnover U. This shouldn’t make VT drop far in the rankings, but the second loss hinders any hope at the playoff. Look for a recovery game in Week 11 against Georgia Tech.

No. 16: Penn State

Penn State was one of the hottest teams in college football about eight days ago. Two losses later, the Nittany Lions are out of the top-four conversation for the playoff. The Big 12 Championship Game remains a small possibility, but anything more than that no longer exists.
