With Christoph Waltz stating that he is not returning as Blofeld,  James Bond fans are left wondering who will play the iconic villain…and when. Based on Waltz’s own words, “that’s the tradition, that there is a new…name,” Blofeld’s  return will coincide with new Bond. So which actors are a good fit to play Blofeld? It’s never too early to consider who might take on the role.

Liam Neeson

In recent years, Neeson has “taken” on roles in which he portrays a veteran crime fighter. But he also played a fantastic villain, Ra’as al Gul, in Batman Begins. Though Neeson is nearing age 70, make no mistake that he is still physically imposing. And if Raph Fiennes also reprises his role of M, in films beyond Bond 25, it would give him a chance to square off again with his Schindler’s List co-star.

But what if we are to re-imagine Blofeld as charming and devilishly handsome? Look no further than Clooney, who can pull off such a characterization of Blofeld, with some added wit and sophistication. Sometimes villains are more threatening when they don’t come across as initially threatening.

But who says Blofeld has to be older? What about the following possibilities…

    Alexander Skarsgard

By virtue of all previous portrayals, Blofeld is supposed to be older and sinister-looking. As with a Clooney portrayal, it is possible to view Blofeld as good-looking, but maybe he can also be younger. Enter Skarsgard, who, incidentally (and forgetfully), played opposite Christoph Waltz in The Legend of Tarzan. Skarsgard showed just how menacing he can be in HBO’s Big Little Lies.

    Ewan McGregor

From Obi Wan Kenobi to Ernst Stavro Blofeld? Why not? McGregor can be quite the chameleon, as evidenced by his role in season three of Fargo. McGregor might also bring some grit to the role.

    Jeremy Renner

Speaking of grit, a Renner portrayal would bring just that. Renner has demonstrated a physical presence in Avengers and The Hurt Locker, and he would be a fascinating choice as Blofeld, one who can actually take on Bond, mano y mano.

Of course there are many others who could take on the role of Blofeld. Then again, maybe Christoph Waltz was merely trying to deceive us all.
