texas tech red raiders 4-5

Last week: Loss vs Kansas State, 42-35
Last rank: 8th

The mid-year downfall of Texas Tech is official, with last Saturday’s loss to Kansas State, 42-35. This marked the Red Raiders’ fifth loss in the past six games, with the only win coming against Kansas.

Midseason collapses are nothing new under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. His teams excel against nonconference opponents but fall to almost anyone in the Big 12. This year’s Texas Tech team started 4-1 and had bowl eligibility almost locked down.

Now, heading into the Nov. 8 game against Baylor, Kingsbury will be fighting for a fifth win, needing one more against TCU or Texas to reach bowl eligibility. Either way, it’s difficult to believe he’s not on the hot seat.

Texas continues to rock back and forth in the 2017 season. It plays better opponents well, due to a quality defense. However, games against ranked opponents like USC, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU have all resulted in losses. The Longhorns did defeat Iowa State, but before it was ranked in the top 25.

Three games remain for UT, as it fights for bowl eligibility. The first will be against Kansas, arguably an automatic win. West Virginia and Texas Tech follow this, both of whom are unranked.

If head coach Tom Herman can win two of these games, his season may be considered a success. If not, it will be more of the same from the Charlie Strong era in Austin.
