2018 NBA mock draft: The NCAA season is here
I’m uncertain what Richards can do to improve his stock long-term. He looks fine as someone who can catch and finish around the rim, with the size and touch to rebound as well. Perhaps the post game, which includes a hook shot and turnaround jumper, will develop.
But outside of that, the Wildcats’ starting center is unremarkable as a prospect. His athleticism is normal for a seven-footer, freakish but not filthy, and not enough to project game-changing defensive impact. He will fill his role this year and in the NBA, scoring points when they come, stuffing the stat sheet from time to time and generally doing his job.
Late in the first round, a sure-thing rotation big man is a gift. Richards is on his way to being that type of player, but for a five-star recruit at a school like Kentucky, ordinary success can feel disappointing. If Richards takes the next step as an offensive fulcrum, perhaps there is a larger conversation we can get into. Let’s talk when and if that happens.
