College Football Rankings: Projected top 10 after Georgia falls
In the wake of Georgia’s loss to Auburn, here’s how the top 10 teams in college football should look.
The No.1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs are no more after a 40-17 loss to Auburn on Saturday afternoon. A shakeup in the next College Football Playoff rankings is coming, with Saturday night’s Notre Dame-Miami and Oklahoma-TCU games having a big say too. The traditional top-10 rankings are sure to shift a lot as well.
Without further ado, here is the projected top 10 in college football after Georgia’s loss.
10. USC Trojans
The Trojans are on their way to beating Colorado as of this writing, so they’ll squeak into the top 10 even with two losses.
9. TCU Horned Frogs
Gary Patterson’s team could push into the top four or five by beating Oklahoma, but even with a loss they’ll stay in the top 10.
8. Miami Hurricanes
Win or lose against Notre Dame, the ‘Canes should stay in the top 10.
7. Wisconsin Badgers
The Badgers get demerits for their non-conference schedule and a weak Big Ten overall. But wins are wins, and a late push into the playoff is still on the table.
6. Auburn Tigers
Even as a two-loss team, Auburn controls its own destiny in the SEC and the playoff picture. They took care of the first step by beating Georgia.
5. Georgia Bulldogs
The blowout loss to Auburn drops the Bulldogs out of the top four. Losses late in the season stay fresh on this ranking committee’s mind.
4. Clemson Tigers
The defending national champions let Florida State hang around deep into the fourth quarter on Saturday. But they keep winning, and that’s enough to keep them in a hypothetical playoff right now.
3. Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma has an opportunity to jump into the rankings with a win over TCU. The opposite result will obviously flip things around even more.
2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame’s only loss, pending the result against Miami, was a one-point setback to Georgia back on Sep. 9. A tentatively projected win over the Hurricanes bumps them to No. 2.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
Barring a surprising loss to Mississippi State Saturday night, Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide will take their inevitable No. 1 perch after Georgia’s loss.
