3. Pat Shurmur

Shurmur actually lasted two seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Browns (2011-2012), which is a feat in an of itself even with the expected bad record (9-23). Since then he has been offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-2015) and Minnesota Vikings (2016-present), and his work this season may get him noticed on the head coaching front.

After Sam Bradford emerged from Week 1 with a knee issue, Case Keenum has mostly been the Vikings quarterback. He he has been good enough to win games (5-2 as the starter, with a sixth win easy to credit to him after coming off the bench) and occasionally very good. That stands as a credit to Shurmur fitting his game plans and play-calling to what Keenum does best, and putting Minnesota’s skill position players in position to succeed.

Shurmur may be content to remain Vikings offensive coordinator right now, but it’s safe to assume he would like a second chance at being a head coach at some point. The Bengals surely won’t be ponying up to pay a new coach, which makes an under the radar offensive coordinator a potential candidate. Don’t be surprised if Shurmur takes an interview in Cincinnati after Lewis is fired.
