20. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Going toe-to-toe with the the soon-to-be No. 1 team in the country should only improve Mississippi State’s perception, but the Bulldogs will fall a bit in the AP Poll after suffering their third loss of the season. Dan Mullen, Todd Grantham and Nick Fitzgerald still deserve a ton of credit for taking the Crimson Tide to the wire in a 31-24 loss.

19. Stanford Cardinal

Outside of the week’s marquee top 10 matchups, Stanford’s 30-22 victory over Washington will have the biggest impact on the playoff race. Bryce Love returned to form with 166 yards and three touchdowns, while K.J. Costello was much better with 211 yards and no turnovers under center. It’s been a wildly inconsistent campaign in Palo Alto, but Stanford has a decent chance at a major bowl game.

18. Michigan Wolverines

Michigan has been overlooked since being decimated by Penn State on Oct. 21, yet is a quiet 8-2 after beating Maryland 35-10 on the road. New starting quarterback Brandon Peters hasn’t been asked to do too much but had a solid performance with 145 yards and two touchdowns on nine completions. Despite returning an FBS-low five starters, Michigan has a shot at a 10-win season with a decent bowl game.

17. Memphis Tigers

The idle Tigers should jump a few losing teams as they continue one of the best seasons in school history at 8-1 in just the second year of the Mike Norvell era. Memphis is on track to get another crack at UCF in the AAC Championship Game, and a win could send it to the New Year’s Six.

16. Washington Huskies

Given their weak strength of schedule, the Huskies are going to plummet following Friday’s 30-22 loss at Stanford despite their strong 8-2 record. Washington’s offense is clearly a step below last year’s unit that went to the College Football Playoff, and Chris Petersen’s team has been bad on the road this season. While Washington needs some help to win the Pac-12 North, a nice bowl game is still in play if it can top Washington State in the Apple Cup.
