SYNOPSIS (VIA IMDB): Pete Bell, a college basketball coach is under a lot of pressure. His team isn’t winning and he cannot attract new players. The stars of the future are secretly being paid by boosters. This practice is forbidden in the college game, but Pete is desperate and has pressures from all around.
First and foremost, after having the “Paper Class” scandal hanging over his head for what surely felt like decades I’m sure Roy Williams would be able to tap into the ethos of the Pete Bell character. Secondly, I never wanted something more in my life than I want to hear a Roy Williams version of Bell’s final press conference after Western University upsets Indiana.
For the trio of big time recruits that help bring Western back to it’s old glory days there isn’t a better trio of players than the three unicorns taking the league by storm. Joel Embiid is this era’s Shaquille O’Neal, with the additional bonus of actually being funny, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future looks as limitless as early Penny Hardaway, and I’d put good money that if there was social media back when Blue Chips was initially shot, Ricky Roe would be sliding into DM’s like Knicks superstar Kristaps Porzingis.
Happy and Ed get a youthful revamp in this edition. With LeBron James looking to make a bigger imprint in Hollywood, it wouldn’t hurt to get his agent some shine in a beloved movie. Shams Charnia gets to fully embrace the post-Woj spotlight that he’s found at Yahoo!, but on the silver screen. Finally, someone has to be Tony, the one player Coach Bell thought was his man through and through. To fill that role we reached out to any former Tar Heels guard and Ty Lawson was ultimately the first to respond back.
