Derwin James

Defensive Back, Florida State

The Cleveland Browns swung a trade with the Houston Texans last April to give the Texans a higher pick in round one, which they used to draft Deshaun Watson. While that looked like a terrible move by Cleveland due to the fact Watson was tearing up the NFL, he is currently done for the season. What that means is the Texans are going to lose more games, and the pick they received will likely be in the top-10 next April.

While I expect them to draft a quarterback first overall, even though they have DeShone Kizer, look for them to draft a safety with their second pick. Cleveland drafted a safety in the first round last year, selecting Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers, but the team needs depth back there. With their second first round pick, the Browns should go with Derwin James, who is a good looking defensive back from Florida State.

James and Peppers would give Cleveland a solid tandem at safety, and we have seen what the New York Jets are doing with Marcus Maye and Jamal Adams this season. Stud safeties can turn a defense around, and adding James to their secondary would make the Browns very formidable back there in 2018. James is a very versatile player, possessing great hands, and the Browns need players who can be used all over the field.
