Running backs to trade away

Primary Target – Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams

One of the best fantasy bargains this season has been Rams running back Todd Gurley. He was typically a second-round pick in offseason drafts and has paid off in a major way. The Rams have the highest scoring offense in the league and Gurley gets all the work he can handle. Los Angeles has done a really good job of expanding his role in the passing game as well, which helps raise his weekly floor. None of this has sounded like a reason to trade him away but there’s a very real argument to deal him away.

First, Gurley would fetch an absolute haul in return. He’s a top-five player in all of fantasy football. If a team has Gurley and has been crushed by injuries or ineffectiveness in other parts of the lineup, Gurley could cover a lot of holes in a lineup that needs the help.

Second, although Gurley could overcome any matchup, his schedule is highly difficult the rest of the season. He has to go to Minnesota, Arizona, and Seattle (who held him to 50 total yards earlier this year). His home dates aren’t anything to write home about as New Orleans, Philadelphia and Tennessee all come to town. Don’t accept anything other than a huge return, but at least float that name out there.

Secondary Targets

Chris Thompson, Washington Redskins – It would be better if he was coming off one of his “boom” games but someone in every league will remember the weeks Thompson played really well. His volume is totally untrustworthy and he’s making his fantasy living off of long plays and touchdowns. His downside is seven or eight touches for under 50 yards. That’s too hard to rely on when the chips are down in the playoffs.

Jordan Howard, Chicago Bears – Jordan Howard is the centerpiece of the Bears offense but that also could backfire the rest of the way. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is struggling to learn on the job and Howard only faces one defense that isn’t in the bottom 10 against the run(San Francisco). Volume is king in fantasy but Howard faces an uphill battle in a bad offense. If the Bears get behind on the scoreboard, Howard will have a tough time finding ways to be valuable.
