Florida Atlantic Owls

Last week: Def. Louisiana Tech 48-23
Last rank: 10

No matter what you think about him, it’s hard to deny Lane Kiffin is doing a terrific job with a Florida Atlantic team that is already the class of Conference USA in his first season.

Florida Atlantic won its sixth straight game with a comfortable 48-23 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon in Ruston. Devin Singletary continued his terrific campaign with 18 rushes for 104 yards and three scores, while Kalib Woods provided the big plays in the passing game with three catches for 118 yards.

While the Bulldogs are in the midst of down season, Saturday’s game was yet another victory for Florida Atlantic over one of the better programs in Conference USA. The Owls have also topped Marshall and Western Kentucky while smashing North Texas 69-31 for the Mean Green’s only conference loss of the year, leaving a loss at Buffalo as the only black mark on Florida Atlantic’s schedule.

Kiffin has made his mark on the offense, as the Owls are piling up 39.4 points per game to rank 10th in the nation, an improvement over last season of 70 spots. Singletary is on his way to collect a few awards with 1,360 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns to lead the nation, helping the Owls rank ninth in yards per game on the ground.

One more victory will clinch the Conference USA East division and likely set up another meeting with North Texas. Next week’s contest against Florida International, which is also much improved under first-year head coach Butch Davis, stands out as one of the biggest of the year for Kiffin.
