What you missed this week in the NBA: Cavaliers, Embiid, weed
4. Biggest Ball brother
What a week it has been in the Ball family. The Kardashians of sports have outdone themselves this time, dominating basketball headlines — both domestically and internationally. Despite LiAngelo being arrested for shoplifting in China during UCLA’s business trip across the globe, Lonzo is still grabbing a ton of attention back home in the United States.
It’s no secret that the eldest of the Ball brothers has struggled heavily to begin the season. His highly-anticipated rookie campaign is off to a bit of a rough start. Despite averaging over 32 minutes per game, the 20-year-old is averaging a mere nine points. His 6.9 assists and 6.6 rebounds per game are impressive, but his shooting has been awful — to say the least — thus far in the season. Ball is shooting just 30.3 percent from the field, 20.3 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the free throw line.
When asked about Ball’s shot recently, Lakers president Magic Johnson told ESPN’s Mike and Mike that the team wouldn’t mess with his shot until after the season has concluded. Whether he wants to give the rookie some time to possibly pan out or just not put Ball under too much stress at the moment, something needs to change.
Even despite Ball’s struggles, he’s shown glimpses of greatness. Recently, Ball became the youngest player ever to record a triple-double (20 years, 15 days), breaking LeBron James’ record of 20 years and 20 days. Ball posted 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds in a 98-90 loss to the Bucks. The concerns returned just a few days later, however, as Ball recorded just 1-of-15 shooting for two points against the Sixers.
