Kliff Kingsbury

Firing a program legend is always difficult, but the Red Raiders need to move in a different direction following the end of the regular season.

As one of the best quarterbacks to play under Mike Leach, Kingsbury broke numerous records during his playing career with the Red Raiders from 1998-2002. Kingsbury brought Leach’s offensive philosophy with him to the coaching ranks and quickly made a name for himself as a coordinator by coaching 2012 Heisman winner Johnny Manziel.

After Tommy Tuberville’s abrupt departure ahead of the 2013 season, the Red Raiders hired Kingsbury in what looked like a no-brainer move. Texas Tech had its best season since the Leach era in Kingsbury’s debut campaign with an 8-5 record and Holiday Bowl upset over Arizona State.

Since then, the Red Raiders have gone 21-27 and could miss a bowl game for the third time in four years despite ranking top five nationally in scoring in both 2015 and 2016. Kingsbury’s defenses have been awful, and the offense has even struggled against good teams like Iowa State and TCU this season.

Texas Tech has a limited ceiling with Kingsbury, and its clear that things are trending downward. Lubbock is a difficult place to win, but Kingsbury isn’t getting the job done at his alma mater.
