Perine’s season thus far can best be summed up in one word: meh.

Perine’s rest of season workload, however, can be summed up in a different word: workload.

With Rob Kelley now officially done for the season in Washington, Perine should once again get a shot to inherit the lead back duties in front of Swiss army knife scatback Chris Thompson. The rookie has been decidedly below-average so far this season, however — 3.2 yards per attempt on 66 carries, including a couple of very underwhelming starts early in the season.

There is reason to believe that Perine can rebound, however. We’re still talking about a guy that averaged 6.0 yards per carry over a prolific three-year stint at Oklahoma in college, where he finished with no fewer than 1,060 yards in any season. With so much obvious physical talent, it seems like the problem with Perine could stem from either confidence issues or trouble with the offensive scheme. Anyone that can do this shouldn’t have any problems athletically at any level of football:

Add Perine if you’re looking for a late-season jolt at running back, but don’t believe that the production will be there until you see it — he has a fairly difficult matchup against the Saints this weekend, whose suddenly dominant defense has limited Doug Martin and LeSean McCoy to under 50 rush yards in consecutive weeks.
