No. 15: Michigan State

Mark Dantonio’s team returned to form in 2017, putting up a solid 9-3 record. This won’t result in a Big Ten Championship Game appearance but a spot in a quality bowl game. Could Sparty make the New Year’s Six? Their only losses came to quality Notre Dame, Ohio State and Northwestern teams, which should help.

No. 14: Stanford

For the second time in three weeks, Stanford defeated a top-10 team. It made for a remarkable end to a 9-3 season, with a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game on the way. This won’t result in a College Football Playoff spot, but a win would put them in play for the New Year’s Six.

No. 13: UCF

UCF completed its fairytale season, remained perfect at 11-0 (one game was canceled and never played). This was almost not the case, however, as it barely held off South Florida, 49-42. A spot in the College Football Rankings will be there, but let’s see just how highly the voters think of them.

No. 12: Washington

Washington’s quiet regular season ended in dominant fashion on Saturday night, defeating in-state rival Washington State. This performance at least provided hope at making the Pac-12 Championship Game while needing a Stanford loss to Notre Dame.

No. 11: TCU

TCU had a great chance at being in the College Football Playoff. Then came the losses to Iowa State and Oklahoma, which put their chances in jeopardy, even for the Big 12 Championship Game. However, after back-to-back wins to close the season, the Horned Frogs will get a spot in Dallas, with an outside chance at the top four. It will take a win over Oklahoma and help from others to pull this off.
