Heisman Watch 2017: Is the race already over?
2. Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
Playing in the Pac-12, we’d already seen Bryce Love lead the way for the Stanford Cardinal offense time and again this season. However, one big question about the speedy junior from Wake Forest, NC has been about the level of defenses that he faced. Thus, he found himself in a position in the regular season finale to show something in that regard against the vaunted defense of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Love answered the call in a big way. No, he didn’t find the end zone in the 38-20 Stanford victory, but he really didn’t need to. he was the consistent and driving force that kept the offense on the field and kept the ball moving throughout the night. When it was all said and done, Love looked like a bellcow back after carrying the rock 20 times for 125 yards. He was a beast, as he has been all season when able to take the field.
Stanford and Love will take the field on Championship weekend as they face the USC Trojans, who beat them earlier in the season, in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Unfortunately, it might take a near-miracle for the running back to jump to No. 1 on the Heisman Watch. However, that shouldn’t lessen the story that he’s been this season and just how electric he’s been to watch throughout the year.
