High Priced Wide Receivers

Julio Jones – Atlanta Falcons ($8600) – Over the last four weeks, no player in the NFL has more receiving yards than Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones. The All-Pro receiver is putting up another huge season and last week the touchdowns finally came around as well. He’s coming off a 252-yard, two-touchdown performance on Sunday. This week the Falcons play the Vikings at home. The Vikings boast a shut down corner in Xavier Rhoades. This is going to be a great matchup to watch. Even with Rhoades, Minnesota ranks 12th in points allowed to wide receivers over the last four weeks. If Rhoades is shadowing Jones, Mohamed Sanu would become a great option. Given the massive price tag and tough matchup with Rhoades, I’d stay away from Jones.

Keenan Allen – Los Angeles Chargers ($8300) – Another receiver on an impressive tear as of late is Los Angeles Chargers’ Keenan Allen. The Chargers are red hot and Allen is a big reason why. He’s the fourth-highest-scoring receiver over the last four weeks. As the Chargers welcome the Browns to Los Angeles on Sunday, it could be another big day for Allen. The Browns have a surprisingly strong pass defense, ranking 23rd in points to receivers over the last four weeks. Most of that comes from the outside corners. Luckily Allen is primarily a slot player. He’s a PPR monster and should have a great matchup any time he’s in the slot this week.

Brandin Cooks – New England Patriots ($7700) – The New England Patriots boast one of the best offenses in the NFL. Wide receiver Brandin Cooks is the number one weapon on the outside, especially with Chris Hogan and Julian Edelman. This week the Patriots play division rival Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. The Bills rookie corner Tre White has played spectacular but the entire Bills secondary has slipped as of late. They rank 16th in points allowed to opposing receivers over the last four weeks. The only issue I see with Cooks is that it’s possible Tom Brady takes short passes over the middle. The upside is that he only needs one big play to pay off in your lineup.

Adam Thielen – Minnesota Vikings ($7500) – A surprising name in the top five scoring wide receivers this year is Minnesota Vikings’ Adam Thielen. Regardless of who has been under center, Thielen has been playing great all season. He runs into a tough matchup this week as the Vikings play a pivotal game against the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta could be without their top corner for the game who’s battling an injury. Over the last four weeks only three teams have played better against wide receivers than the Falcons. This game could become explosive and Thielen could be a part of that.

DeAndre Hopkins – Houston Texans ($7300) – Another wide receiver who is producing regardless of who is playing quarterback is Houston Texans’ wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. The talented receiver was playing his best with Deshaun Watson under center. He has taken a bit of a step back but over the last four weeks he is second in receiving yards behind Julio Jones. This week the Texans get a weak Tennessee Titans secondary. Tennessee is ninth in points allowed to opposing wide receivers. Granted it was with Deshaun Watson at quarterback, Hopkins had ten catches for 107 yards and a touchdown in their initial matchup. If he gets even decent quarterback play Hopkins will likely finish inside the top five wide receiver rankings.
