10 biggest Heisman busts of the last 25 years
3. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida (2007)
To say that Tim Tebow is a college football legend would be putting it mildly. Once named the starting quarterback in his sophomore season, he never finished worse than fifth in Heisman Trophy voting, and rightfully so. Despite being anything but conventional for the Florida Gators under center (jump pass, anyone?), he was a force to be reckoned with every time that he took the field. However, his sophomore season and first as a starter was the most eye-popping year of his career and the one that earned him the Heisman.
In 13 games, Tebow completed 3,286 yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions on the year. If that wasn’t good enough, the brute of a man plunged his way into the end zone 23 additional times as a runner, also amassing 895 yards in that capacity as well. It was an iconic year for an iconic player.
With that said, there was every reason to doubt Tebow as an NFL prospect. Yet, that didn’t stop the Denver Broncos from taking him 25th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. He played sparingly as a rookie, and looked less then impressive, but still started 11 games in 2011. Though he completed only 46.5 percent of his throws, he still helped the Broncos to the playoffs.
Frankly, the 7-4 regular season record and the unforgettable playoff win that he earned Denver are why Tebow isn’t “higher” on this list. Even still, he was done in the NFL after a one-year stint with the New York Jets in 2012 and is now trying his hand at professional baseball.
