3. Figure out outfield rotation

The Yankees had this same problem last season, and it’s even more evident now. They simply have way too many outfielders. The primary reason they got away with it last season was because Ellsbury and Hicks both spent a decent amount of time on the disabled list.

Right field is secured, that much is certain. They’re going to rotate Aaron Judge and Stanton between right field and the DH spot. The opening day job is presumably going to go to Judge with Stanton as the DH.

The cluster is in center field and left field. Left field is Brett Gardner’s spot, and Aaron Boone would be hard pressed to take his bat out of the lineup. Clint Frazier, who has an absolute cannon, spent time in left field, but there’s obviously a defensive drop off between the two.

In center, they have Hicks and Ellsbury as mentioned before. The Yankees insist it’s Hicks’ job and Ellsbury is the backup, but you’re not going to pay Ellsbury the money he’s making and not play him. This is one of the main reasons the Yankees want to get rid of Ellsbury, but his full no-trade clause makes that difficult.

That means they divvy up at-bats for four guy with only two spots available. The Yankees aren’t trading Frazier otherwise they’d consider shopping him at the Winter Meetings, but if they manage to dump Ellsbury’s salary on someone else it makes their outfield rotation a lot easier to manage.
