What To Make Of Florida And Egor Koulechov?

The Gators have beaten Stanford, Gonzaga, and Cincinnati. Florida also played brilliantly, in a loss, to the Duke Blue Devils. And yet, a heart-breaker to Loyal-Chicago and a blowout loss to Florida State is raising more questions than answers.

As confusing is the play of senior Egor Koulechov, who is averaging all the pretty counting-stats, but has had a few absolute duds so far this season.

If you want to be concerned, it would make more sense to worry about Koulechov than Florida as a team. Yes, obviously, the two go hand-in-hand, except Mike White is a good enough coach to work around a player having iffy games — at least here and there.

For the Gators to be consistently good this season, Koulechov needs to void duds like he had against Goznaga and Loyala-Chicago.

But wait, there’s more. There’s always more!

The problem here isn’t only that he sometimes scores under double-digits, it is that he keeps jacking up inefficient shots in the process. Despite the great looking overall numbers, the guard has shot below 35 percent from the field in six of Florida’s nine games.

When he’s great, he is really great. At the same time, when he’s bad, Koulechov is a debacle to the senses.

If I am being honest, I don’t know what to make of it yet. All I do know is that this is something to monitor. Is it a trend or an early-season aberration?
