College Basketball Rankings: Projected Top 25 for Week 7
There’s a good chance Xavier could fall in this week’s rankings thanks to a close victory over East Tennessee State which nearly resulted in a major upset at home. The Musketeers have a national player of the year candidate in Trevon Bluiett but needed all 40 minutes to beat East Tennessee State. Still, this team should remain in the top 10.
Texas A&M had no trouble with Savannah State in Week 6 as the Aggies put up 113 points in a 47-point victory. The Aggies are led by DJ Hogg and a strong offensive attack while Robert Williams is still trying to get back into the swing of things. He didn’t play in Week 6, but he is an important piece to Texas A&M’s SEC title puzzle. Could this team dethrone preseason title favorite Kentucky?
Wichita State was the latest top-five team to drop via upset thanks to an Oklahoma surprise win in Week 6. The Shockers rose all the way to No. 3 in last week’s polls after a Duke loss, but they couldn’t hold on as the red-hot Sooners came to town and downed them, 91-83. Gregg Marshall will have this team atop the American Athletic Conference this season — their first year in the league — but for now they have to live with an upset.
Untested and overrated. That was the consensus for the Wildcats heading into December and their best win on the season was probably Harvard. That’s not good for a team ranked in the top 10, but they knocked out a tough Virginia Tech team in Week 6. While that’s not exactly a signature win, it’ll be enough to silence doubters until they play UCLA on Dec. 23. Kentucky will then open conference play with a tough stretch and a chance to prove itself.
With the quiet week of college basketball, North Carolina partook in the only battle of ranked teams. The Tar Heels went on the road to take on No. 20 Tennessee led by Rick Barnes and it took a late 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to seal the deal. North Carolina is a tough team and it grew up fast with the victory on the road in an extremely hostile environment.
