14. Oklahoma Sooners – 2018

Result: TBD

Our first team from the 2018 College Football Playoff to make an appearance is the Oklahoma Sooners. Boasting the Heisman Trophy winner, Baker Mayfield, at quarterback, there have been few teams that have been more fun to watch this year than the Sooners. There’s no question that the elite level of performance from the quarterback (in addition to his fiery and sometimes questionable on-field antics) has been a tremendous part of that. However, another part of that is to their detriment in terms of these rankings.

Put simply, it’s hard to have much faith at all in the Oklahoma defense heading into the CFP. While they only managed to lose one game this season and blanked a number of opponents (proverbially speaking), they’ve also been in some tight games that shouldn’t have been tight at all given the difference in quality of the two teams. And the reason for that is that the Sooners defense has been prone to some highly lackluster performances, and with no warning whatsoever.

With that said, they are dangerous enough on offense that it ultimately hasn’t mattered. That’s why they were able to capture the Big 12 crown and why they were able to make their way into the CFP field. Having said that, their offensive prowess only matters so much when comparing them to both the field this year and the CFP fields of the previous three years.
