MLB Power Rankings: Post Winter Meetings
21. San Francisco Giants
There is only one word to describe the 2017 season for the San Francisco Giants — ugly. Last year was one of the worst in franchise history for the Giants, and they are largely locked into the roster for the next few seasons. The front office will have to get creative to get this team back to the postseason in a highly-competitive NL West.
The Giants had an offer in place pending Giancarlo Stanton’s approval, but he turned it down. Despite his stated preference to end up on the West Coast, Stanton did not view the Giants as an immediate contender. Sadly for Giants fans, it’s hard to argue with Stanton’s reasoning.
It is very difficult to come back from a 98-loss season without making major moves, and the Giants have gotten started on that by acquiring Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays. However, things still seem…sub-optimal in the Bay Area.
San Francisco is betting big on Longoria bouncing back from the worst year of his career. He did hit 36 home runs in 2016, so there could be plenty left in the tank as he enters his age-32 season. The Giants still need to address their outfield and starting rotation and have little-to-no free cash to make things happen.
