MLB Power Rankings: Post Winter Meetings
8. Colorado Rockies
It’s been all about the bullpen so far this offseason for the Colorado Rockies, who re-signed Jake McGee and landed Bryan Shaw at the Winter Meetings. The relief corps has been a clear area of focus the past two years for the Rockies front office as they build a support system for their young rotation. Identifying pitchers with the type of stuff that can play in Coors Field has paid off for Colorado.
The Rockies are also doing their best to retain closer Greg Holland, who had a very strong return to the mound in 2017. He only had one bad month all year, and it was a disaster. Other than that ugly month of August, Holland looked as dominant as he had been with the Kansas City Royals before Tommy John.
Retaining Holland is a must for the Rockies in a year where the only other elite closer on the open market is his former Royals teammate Wade Davis. If they can’t make Holland a strong offer, then it’s unlikely they will be able to land Davis, who could be even more expensive.
Aside from continuing to address the bullpen, the Rockies need to sign a corner outfielder to replace right fielder Carlos Gonzalez. Former top-50 prospect David Dahl still has impact potential at the age of 23, but he lost almost the entire 2017 season due to a series of mysterious ailments. Raimel Tapia is another top prospect who could push for a starting job in 2018.
