28. Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are still sticking to their rebuilding plan for now, and have not made any major moves this winter. Adding catcher Welington Castillo on a two-year deal should help to provide some stability behind the plate. Castillo hit .282/.323/.490 in 96 games last year for the Baltimore Orioles and added 20 home runs and 53 RBI while throwing out 49 percent of basestealers to lead MLB.

Castillo will be a massive improvement over the duo of Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith who combined to throw out only 24 of 108 stolen base attempts last year. Smith was particularly awful, nabbing only eight of 56 attempts on the bases.

For now, the White Sox are holding onto All-Star first baseman Jose Abreu and All-Star right fielder Avisail Garcia. Both are still under team control beyond this season, so the White Sox can hold onto them until the right package comes along. The team was blown away with offers for Adam Eaton and Jose Quintana last year and jumped into action quickly. They should be prepared to do the same thing with Abreu and Garcia.

Seeing the White Sox linked to Orioles All-Star third baseman Manny Machado was surprising at the Winter Meetings, but those talks are unlikely to go anywhere since Chicago is unwilling to include Michael Kopech or Lucas Giolito in a trade. The White Sox would need a guarantee that Machado would be willing to sign a long-term extension before parting with either Kopech or Giolito and the Orioles are not going to allow potential trade partners a 72-hour window to negotiate with Machado.
