Cleveland Browns rumors: 5 head coaching candidates
3. Matt Nagy
Since Andy Reid gave up play-calling duties and Nagy took over, the Kansas City Chiefs offense has taken off again. In the four games with Nagy calling plays, the Chiefs have averaged 29 points and 421 yards of offense per game, and Alex Smith’s passer rating has improved by nearly 30 points compared to the previous four games. A fairly simple formula, led by more touches for running back Kareem Hunt, is definitely working.
Nagy has been an assistant under Andy Reid for five seasons, as quarterbacks coach (2013-2015) and now as offensive coordinator. That overlaps with Dorsey’s four seasons as Chiefs’ general manager (2013-2016), before an odd parting of ways in June of 2017. So based purely on that familiarity, it’s easy to tie Nagy to the potential job opening in Cleveland.
Nagy will probably have as many head coaching interviews as he wants during this NFL carousel. The Browns will probably not be the most appealing opening he’ll be in the mix for too. But maybe Dorsey can procure an interview, and sell the idea of Cleveland, some young talent in place and potentially two top-five picks (at this point, pending Week 17’s results) in April’s draft to a first-time head coach.
