Chicago Bears: 5 head coaching candidates
By Joe Schiller
3. John DeFilippo
While coordinators are always hot candidates for head coaching gigs, so are quarterbacks coaches. John DeFilippo is another name being mentioned around head coaching rumors this offseason and will get his fair share of interviews.
DeFilippo is being considered so highly because of his work with some of the league’s brightest young quarterbacks. He was the quarterback coach for Derek Carr during his rookie season with the Raiders and has spent the last two years working with Carson Wentz. From his first to the second year, Wentz made an incredible jump and was playing at an MVP level this season before tearing his ACL. Those jumps don’t just happen on their own and DeFilippo deserves the credit.
From one young quarterback to another, DeFilippo would have the chance to work with Mitchell Trubisky if he came to Chicago. He possesses a ton of talent and has the tools to be a franchise quarterback, but that doesn’t happen without the right coaching. With the situation Trubisky is in right now, it’s not a recipe for success. He needs a coach or an offensive coordinator who can come in and help him get over the rookie hump and make the progression we’ve seen likes of Jared Goff and Carson Wentz make.
Inexperience is always going to be a knock on any first-time head coach but why not give him a shot? The Bears are better off doing that then recycling through another head coach who’s continuously been average with other teams.
